I learned to sew from my mother when I was under 10 years old.  She showed me how on a feather weight Singer machine.  When I was a bit older she bought me one.  The machines were made of all metal and mine is as good now as it was when it was built.  I still use it for all my buttonholes.  Over the years I made my own clothes, still using that Singer machine.  In the 1990's I began making art quilts.  A friend lent me her Bernina machine and encouraged me to do free-motion quilting which is like doodling.  I loved doodling!  Eventually I bought myself a Bernina machine around 2014 on a payment plan and have been using it ever since.

So when and why did I begin making clothes on the scale that I do now?  It first happened in 2014, after my husband and I lived in Rome for 7 months.  I started fantasizing about making clothing with mixed fabric prints.  Then I learned how to silkscreen print with fiber reactive dyes and made my own fabrics.  One garment led to another.  I now also print with natural dyes and mix my fabrics with commercial ones.  The process of sewing for me is calming, satisfying and dynamic.  I hope you'll check out my wearable art garments, try some on, get one for yourself or as a gift for someone else.
